FlyByWire A380X: What to Expect from the Free Open-Source Superjumbo
FlyByWire Simulations outlines what the A380X developer preview will include — from flight management systems to failure simulations — and what's still in the works.
FlyByWire Simulations, the team behind the wildly popular free A32NX mod, has published a detailed NOTAM outlining exactly what to expect from their A380X — and they're being refreshingly transparent about both capabilities and limitations.
Setting Expectations
FBW is clear: the initial release is a developer preview in open alpha. Most features will work and you'll be able to fly decent A-to-B flights on VATSIM, but many systems are still in active development. The goal is to give outside contributors access and provide an early look while the team continues building.
What's Working
The feature list is impressive for a free, open-source project:
- Flight Management and Navigation — custom FMS with full procedure support
- Flight Displays with electronic checklists
- Core Aircraft Systems including failure simulations
- Flight Control Surfaces with wing flex simulation
- Protection Features and enhanced situational awareness
- Landing Gear and Taxi Systems
- FlyPadOS v3 for aircraft configuration
The project has grown from over 170 dedicated contributors over four years, bringing expertise in programming, sound design, and aircraft modelling.
The Bigger Picture
What FlyByWire is doing with the A380X mirrors their approach with the A32NX — start with a solid foundation, release early, and iterate rapidly with community input. Given what they've achieved with the A320, there's every reason to believe the A380X will follow a similar trajectory from promising alpha to polished product.
The A380X will be completely free and open-source, continuing FBW's commitment to accessible, high-quality simulation.
